#afftonstrong Students - April 2019

Congratulations to our April 2019 #afftonstrong Students! They include:

Meet Chase A., Affton High School senior and #afftonstrong Student. From a staff member: Chase serves as an office monitor during 6th hour.  A parent came to take a tour of the school and an incident was happening at the time she came.  I asked Chase if he would give the parent a tour of the school and he agreed.  He spent about 20 minutes explaining and touring the school with the prospective parent and when they were finished the parent commented two things.  I was pleasantly surprised by the school and especially by Chase who was friendly, informative and polite.  She sent Chase a special Thank you card for his time and commitment to Affton High School.  I spoke to her on the phone and again she commended Chase on his duties as a Student Ambassador.  

Meet Madina B., Affton High School freshman and #afftonstrong Student. From one of her teachers: Madina is a freshman and one of the hardest working, most optimistic students I have encountered in my 19 year career.  She is a great role model for all Affton students as she is also highly engaged in learning, not afraid to take risks and always looking for ways she can contribute to the classroom, school and wider community.  Mr. Henning's nickname for her is "Sunshine" because she radiates such eagerness to learn and such a warm and kind demeanor.  I look forward to seeing her each day in class and it's a great privilege to be her teacher.  

Meet Owen B., Affton Early Childhood preschooler and #afftonstrong Student. From his teacher: Owen is a wonderful student and a great friend to all. He is hardworking and cares about all of his friends in his class. He makes sure to include everyone and always lends a helping hand when others are in need. When our class got a new student later in the year, Owen made sure to welcome the student and helped him learn the rules and routines on our classroom and school. Owen is #afftonstrong!

Meet Steve B., Mesnier Primary School second-grader and #afftonstrong Student. From his teacher: Steve always has a positive attitude and such a great friend to his peers. He comes to school ready to learn and always tries his best. Steve is always focused during lessons and work time. He goes above and beyond to be respectful and kind to all students and teachers. Steve displays the Mesnier Primary expectations daily and continues to push himself to be his very best.

Meet Alexandra C., Affton High School freshman and #afftonstrong Student. From one of her school counselors: I am nominating Alexandra because she is an extraordinary young lady. As I work with an organization named MOACAC (MO Association of College Admission Counseling), this year I was part of the planning committee for our annual conference. In our meeting back in December, we needed a logo for the conference. I reached out to our Business and Graphic Design teacher, Allen Stringer, to see if he had any students that would be interested in creating one. We received about 15 logos and we narrowed it down to 5 for the MOACAC to choose. Alex's was absolutely the best and it officially became the logo for the conference. It worked out so well. Many people couldn't believe that a freshman created it. A college admission rep even told me to let Alex know that they want her when she is ready to graduate. It was a proud moment for me to showcase one of our great Affton students in an outside setting. MOACAC was very appreciative of her hard work!  Alex deserves recognition for her amazing creativity and imagination. Thanks for your consideration!

Meet Shelby C., Mesnier Primary School second-grader and #afftonstrong Student. From his teacher: Shelby comes to school every day with a smile on his face. He goes out of his way to be a great friend to everyone in the classroom. He works hard on all his work and is always very focused. Shelby shows respect daily by following our classroom expectations and being a great leader. He is such a great addition to our classroom and helps to make our class a community! 

Meet Amelia D., Gotsch Intermediate School fifth-grader and #afftonstrong Student. From one of her school secretaries:  Amelia is a future trendsetter for this world. Her passion to raise awareness and prevention for suicide is inspirational for people of all ages. You can see how this much this particular topic means to her and makes others around her passionate about the cause as well. While she quietly plans everything out and thinks through every detail, the moment she is speaking in front of an audience, they take notice of her. She will be one who will change the world making it a better place. I, for one, am excited to see how far she will soar!

Meet Riley M., Affton High School freshman and #afftonstrong Student. From one of her teachers: Riley is working hard to do the best she can in the classroom and in athletics.  She is going out of her way to assist other students, but she does it without fanfare.  She wants to help others because she knows it's the right thing to do, and Affton High School is a better place because of it.

 Meet Anastasia N., Affton High School sophomore and #afftonstrong Student. From one of her teachers: Anastasia has graciously taken on the task of helping a classmate who struggles with extreme anxiety in one of her classes. As a result of her kindness and leadership abilities, this student is thriving socially and emotionally.

Meet Jasmine S., Gotsch Intermediate School third-grader and #afftonstrong Student. From her teacher:  It is with great honor to be able to nominate Jasmine Serra. Jasmine is an extremely hard worker, that never gives up. Jasmine is also a kind and welcoming friend to all students. She makes sure that all students feel included and valued for their contribution to the classroom. Jasmine volunteers her time during lunch and specials to help with Gotsch's Green Team Program. 

Meet Braelyn S., Affton Early Childhood preschooler and #afftonstrong Student. From her teacher:  Braelyn entered our classroom in August as a reserved, quiet, yet enthusiastic 4-year-old child.  Very quickly we noticed her ability to connect with peers and staff and display empathy and kindness towards everyone.  At a young age, it amazes staff that Braelyn follows the "golden rule" to treat others as we expect to be treated.  When Braelyn notices peers having difficulty transitioning, she offers her support,  empathy, and encouragement to the peers and often adult intervention is not needed because Braelyn has beautifully managed the situation. 
     Throughout the year, Braelyn has received instruction in social emotional learning which has helped to increase her confidence and awareness in going out of her way to support all students, including students with IEP's.  Braelyn initiates empathy by approaching the students who are crying and in distress by rubbing their back and asking if they are okay.  She reminds students of routines and classroom rules with kindness and a soft reassuring voice. When peers need help putting on coats and loading backpacks, they seek Braelyn's assistance.  
     We can depend on Braelyn to always act as a model of excellence for all students and staff. She has an innate ability at a very young age to display integrity, empathy and build positive relationships with others.  Braelyn's mother recently shared a story of Braelyn's kind heart. A mother and son asked Braelyn and her mother for money to buy food at a local restaurant. Without hesitation, Braelyn whispered to her mother they could share their pizza. What a beautiful example of Braelyn's character. She exemplifies high standards in treating others with respect and offering support and encouragement to all. We are so proud of Braelyn!
