AHS In-Person Learning Transitioning to Fixed Blended on Oct 27

Following a review of COVID-19 related data for South County and the region, and in consultation with the St. Louis County Department of Public Health, we have determined that we will be able to move students who chose the In-Person Learning option in grades 9-12 to Fixed Blended (hybrid learning with staggered attendance) at the start of 2nd Quarter beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

For families with children in 9th-12th grades who chose In-Person Learning:

  • Students with last names beginning A-K will attend in-person classes at Affton High School on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting on Oct. 27, 2020. Wednesdays and Fridays will be virtual learning days from home.
  • Students with last names beginning L-Z attend in-person classes at Affton High School on Wednesdays and Fridays starting on Oct. 28, 2020. Tuesdays and Thursdays will be virtual learning days from home.
  • All students participate in virtual instruction on Mondays.
  • Affton High School hours will be 7:30 a.m. - 2:15 p.m. each day (Wednesdays will no longer be early dismissal days). Students can be dropped off at school beginning at 7:10 a.m.
  • As a reminder, families are committed to their original choice of learning option for the first semester of school.
  • Families who have students with different last names are grouped by the last name of their oldest child.
  • All meals will be provided at no cost, including a grab-and-go breakfast as students enter the building and lunch served in the cafeteria with social distancing and assigned seating. Drive-thru Grab & Go meal service will also continue at the AHS Commons only, Monday-Friday from 7 am - 12:30 pm.
  • Bus service to and from school will be available at a reduced capacity. Routes will prioritize students who reside more than 3.5 miles from school, but we will transport as many students as possible on each route while maintaining health and safety guidelines. More information will be shared separately on bus routes and safety protocols for impacted families.
  • All students must wear a mask while at school or on the bus, per the St. Louis County Department of Public Health mandate. Mask breaks will be allowed when appropriate and it is safe to do so.
  • Families must review the COVID-19 Daily Wellness Check and ensure their children are symptom-free before sending them to school. If your child exhibits any of the following symptoms, please keep them home and notify your child’s school office: Fever of 100 or more; chills; cough; shortness of breath or difficulty breathing; fatigue; muscle or body aches; headache; new loss of taste or smell; sore throat; congestion or runny nose; nausea or vomiting; or diarrhea.
  • Families and staff are asked to contact the district as soon as possible if they, or someone in their household, think they have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, are awaiting test results, or test positive for COVID-19. Families should email covid@afftonschools.net to inform the district.
  • Affton High School will be sharing additional information with families about our on-campus protocols over the next weeks. On our website, you can find a summary of What to Expect, as well as our health and safety measures and positive case protocol.

For families with children who selected Affton’s Virtual Academy or Virtual Academy Plus:

  • Students continue to participate in online learning. Synchronous time with teachers will be adjusted; more information to follow in Canvas.
  • Affton High School will focus on increasing scheduled in-person learning opportunities for Virtual Academy Plus students as appropriate.

Communication on COVID-19 Cases
Affton School District will notify all families and employees within the building via email if we are aware of a positive case in a school (student or staff). We will be limited on the information we can legally provide, but any student or staff member identified as a close contact of a suspected or positive case will receive a separate, more detailed notification. Families and staff can also view an overview of cases using the district’s COVID-19 dashboard, housed on our website at http://afftonschools.net/covid19/dashboard.

We are looking forward to welcoming our high school students back into the classroom and will take every precaution to keep students and staff safe during in-person learning. As always, thank you for your patience and continued support.
