2020 Summer School Information

UPDATE MAY 15, 2020

Enrollment Information for Grades K-8
Based on feedback from families on our K-8 virtual summer school survey, we have chosen to offer elementary and middle school Summer School programming through Edgenuity, an online learning platform. Summer learning for students going into grades K-8 will focus on reviewing and building key Math and ELA skills so students are ready to successfully start the next school year. Click on these links to learn more about Edgenuity’s elementary curriculum and middle school curriculum. All courses are completely free to Affton families and will be facilitated by certified Affton teachers to ensure each student has the ongoing support they need with frequent communication via email or other electronic means.

We know each student and family has unique needs so we’ve formatted our program to be flexible enough to fit into a diverse range of family schedules:

  • Our program will run June 8 - July 31. We’ve chosen to increase the length of our summer program to ensure the amount of instructional screen time each day is appropriate for our students.

  • Students can be enrolled in both math and ELA classes, or choose to take just one.

  • Each course has been built to provide engaging learning experiences for approximately 1 hour a day for the length of the program; students enrolled in both Math and ELA will have approximately 2 hours of learning activities each day.

  • The program is flexible enough to enable students who want to move beyond each day’s assigned activities to work ahead at a pace that feels right for them.

Enrollment Information for Grades 9-12
Last week, notifications of needed summer school enrollment were emailed home. If you did not receive a notification, please double check your spam folder as emails from Tyler SIS (parent portal) occasionally get flagged.

This summer, in addition to offering a full library of online core classes for students who previously failed a semester class, we will also be offering an increased selection of proactive electives for students wanting to get ahead. In the past, these electives have been limited to PE, health, and personal finance. For summer 2020, students will have the ability to enroll in up to two courses out of twelve elective offerings to earn a total of 1 credit (one 0.5 credit course per two-week session). You can find the list of available electives and enroll using our Elective Sign-Up Form.

Having evaluated multiple programming options, we will be utilizing the Edgenuity online learning system for all of our high school summer classes. Edgenuity online classes are already commonly used with AHS students for personalized learning opportunities so we know the program will offer rich educational experiences that will allow us to meet the academic needs of our students. Please see our Frequently Asked Questions page for more details on what students and parents can expect this summer.

Affton's summer school planning around the COVID-19 pandemic has been very fluid as we have continued to learn more about what could be most appropriate with the health and safety of our students and staff at top of mind. With the information we have at this time from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, we have made the difficult decision to move all of our K-12 summer school programming entirely online for this year. This virtual program will not only allow us to meet the academic needs of our students, but will also help protect the health and safety of both our students and staff.

For families who have already applied to be part of the Summer Journey Program, please know that we will be saving your application information for next summer when we plan to host the program once again. For families who did not apply to Summer Journey, you will still have the opportunity to have your child(ren) enroll in our new virtual program.

To provide your input on specific online programming details, please complete our Parent Interest Survey by Thursday, May 14.

We appreciate your ongoing patience and understanding as we strive to develop educational opportunities that will ultimately be in the best interest of our students, safety for our staff, and overall well-being of the Affton community.
