AHS Hosts Annual Poetry Out Loud Competition

Thirty-seven students at Affton High School competed in the school’s annual Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Sophomore Hope Daugherty won the competition with a recitation of “Refusing Silence” by poet Tess Galligher.

“I participated in Poetry Out Loud just thinking it was for a grade in my Honors English III class, but it has become so much more,” said Daugherty. ” It gave me a new perspective on poetry and the importance of the art of it. I selected ‘Refusing Silence’ by Tess Gallagher because the title really hooked me and the poet’s word choices were especially interesting to me. I felt connected with the poem.”

Ajla Gogic, a junior, placed second for her reading of “Requests for Toy Piano” by Tony Hogland, and Pamela Petterchak, also a junior, placed third with a recitation of Robyn Schiff’s “Dyed Carnations.”

Daugherty will move on to compete in the Poetry Out Loud St. Louis County competition, sponsored by the Missouri Arts Council, to be held on February 1.

“I can’t wait!,” said Daugherty. “Whether I make it to the state competition or not, it has still been a great experience.”
