Learning Options

As we get closer to the start of the 2020-2021 school year and reopening our schools, we know you are wondering what our return to school looks like.

Based on feedback from families and staff, our Return to School Plans are focused on providing two learning options for families: In-Person and Online. As we previously shared, parents and staff indicated a variety of preferences for learning schedules in our surveys. We recognize that these preferences may have changed so we are focused on providing options for families.

You can learn more about what In-Person and Online options will look like at each of our schools by clicking:

Affton Everywhere Learning - In-Person Option

During the 2020-2021 school year, In-Person Learning will look different based on the level of community spread of COVID-19 in our area and can transition between Onsite, Fixed Blended, and Distance at any time. Shifts on a district-wide level between Onsite, Fixed Blended, and Distance Learning will be decided based on guidance from government & health officials.

OnsiteIN-PERSON LEARNING: Students are permitted to learn at school with additional health and safety measures, which may include face coverings, hand washing/sanitizing routines, staggered transitions, outdoor breaks, recess, electives modified/adapted, no large gatherings, etc. Participation is necessary for attendance requirements and grading policies will apply to the scheduled courses.

Fixed BlendedHYBRID LEARNING ON STAGGERED SCHEDULE:
In the event that community spread of COVID-19 warrants strict social distancing by reducing the number of students onsite at school at any given time, students will receive onsite instruction at school 2 days/week and distance learning at home 1 day/week. Under this scenario, we would have A days and B days assigned to each family based on last name. Half our students would attend in-person classes on A days, while the other half would learn remotely. The roles would flip on B days, and 1 day would be scheduled as a Distance Learning at Home day for everyone. A/B Day participation is necessary for attendance requirements and grading policies will apply to the scheduled courses.

Distance100% DISTANCE LEARNING AT HOME:
In the event that community spread of COVID-19 warrants school buildings to be closed, all in-person instruction will transition to distance learning at home. Students attend classes online from home on a regular school schedule, allowing for an easier transition to onsite instruction when schools reopen. Online participation is necessary for attendance requirements and grading policies will apply to the scheduled courses.

Affton Everywhere Learning - Online Option
During the 2020-2021 school year, Online Learning will be offered as an option that maintains more consistency and will be unaffected by the level of community spread of COVID-19 in our area (one exception being Virtual Academy Plus in-person opportunities).

OnlineONLINE LEARNING:
Students only attend classes online from home on a structured schedule using a digital platform. Affton staff members will maintain connections and support students working independently on core and elective courses. Participation is necessary for attendance requirements and grading policies will apply to the scheduled courses.

Online Plus
ONLINE LEARNING PLUS:
Students attend classes online from home on a structured schedule using a digital platform with scheduled times onsite at school to access specific resources, courses, supports, and activities. Affton staff members will maintain connections and support students working independently on core and elective courses. Participation is necessary for attendance requirements and grading policies will apply to the scheduled courses.

Choose Your Learning Option

From July 20-26, you can choose how your student will attend Affton School District by selecting a learning option: In-Person, Online, or Online Plus. Please log in to the Parent Portal and indicate your learning choice and transportation need for each child in your family by July 26, 2020.
  • Log in to the Parent Portal on a computer or tablet; it does not work well on cell phones.
  • As a reminder, be sure you are on the Parent Tab. Your email address is your login name, and you can click Forgot Password for it to be sent to you.
  • At the top right of your student dashboard, please change Academic Year to 2020-2021.
  • For assistance with Tyler SIS, please contact Sally Onkle.

It’s essential that parents make these choices in a timely manner so we can plan accordingly for teachers, staff, and classroom/course enrollment to support our students. We know these decisions will be challenging, so we’ll do our best to help by providing the details you’ll need to make an informed decision. Families of returning Affton School District students who do not select an option for each of their students by July 26, 2020, will be automatically enrolled in In-Person Learning and will be opted out of bus transportation.
