Dear Affton Families and Staff:
As we approach the winter weather season, we want to take this opportunity to remind everyone about our procedures and notifications for dismissing early or closing school. We take any decision that changes our school day seriously and generally only do so when conditions pose a threat to the safety of our students and staff. These conditions can be related to inclement winter weather, but they may also be caused by any emergency situation that occurs within the District.
When the decision is made to close schools or alter our school day, we use various procedures to notify the Affton community. Notification announcements for full-day school closings will normally be made by 6 a.m., and afternoon and evening activity cancellations will normally be announced by 2 or 2:30 p.m. You can review specific details on our website at http://afftonschools.net/about/school-closings/.
If you haven’t done so already, please be sure to “Like” us on Facebook at facebook.com/AfftonSchoolDistrict and “Follow” us on Twitter @AfftonSchools. Cancellations will be easiest to access via Affton School District social media platforms.
Closing and emergency notifications are sent via phone calls, emails and texts through the District’s parent notification system (SchoolMessenger). Affton School District also posts school closings on the following radio and television stations:
- Radio – KMOX (1120 AM)
- Television – KTVI (Channel 2), KMOV (Channel 4), KSDK (Channel 5), and KPLR (Channel 11)
While we try not to close school early due to weather-related concerns or other emergency situations, every family should have a plan for picking up children from school or the bus stop during an unplanned early dismissal. We also ask that you make sure you have provided your child’s school with information on all adults who are authorized to pick up your child at school. If necessary, due to safety concerns, students will be kept at school until they are picked up by an adult who has previously been identified on the emergency contact form that parents are asked to complete at the beginning of each school year.
One important consideration that we encourage parents and guardians to keep in mind: In the event of an early dismissal or school closing, please do not call your child’s school. We will share all necessary information and updates via the District’s parent notification system (SchoolMessenger), as well as on the District’s website, Facebook page and Twitter account. Telephone lines may be needed for emergency communication.
Just like you, the safety of our students and staff remains of utmost importance to the District throughout the school year. We appreciate your cooperation in planning for unexpected circumstances, regardless of whether it’s a school safety issue, a power outage or inclement weather.
