This school year we will once again be recognizing one Affton student each month for the things that make them Affton Strong, both in and out of school. Our Affton Strong Student of the Month for March is:
Jane Ireland – Rogers Middle School
Jane is a sixth-grader at Rogers Middle School and is proud to be Affton Strong! “Jane Ireland always has a smile on her face, and is an absolute delight to have in class,” said Beth Daniels, sixth-grade Math teacher. “She is an extremely hard worker, participates eagerly, asks meaningful questions, tries her best, collaborates well, thinks outside the box, and is respectful and kind to other students, as well as her teachers! She is a stellar example of being AFFTON STRONG!!!!”
Name: Jane Ireland, age 12 (6th grade)
Parents: Mike and Lindsay Ireland
Sibling(s): Logan (1st grade at Mesnier Primary)
What do you like best about Rogers Middle School? I like a lot of things. I like the classes, they are all really fun. I like the amount of free time we have between classes, especially not having lines in the hallway. I like the lunch selections. It’s just a great school.
What is your favorite subject? I have three. PE, because I like to learn the drills for different sports and then getting to play the actual sport. Science, because I like all the labs we do and the teacher, Mr. Peifer, he’s really nice. Math, because Mrs. Daniels is one of the best teachers and the way she teaches makes it easy. She shows us shortcuts and gives us better ways to solve problems.
Who is your favorite teacher you’ve ever had? Do I have to choose one? They’ve all been really great! But my top three are Mrs. Daniels, Mrs. Baumgartner (retired 3rd grade teacher at Gotsch Intermediate), and Mr. Peifer. They’re all really fun teachers. They reward you if you’re good, they don’t yell if you’ve been bad. They give fair warnings, and the chance to change your behavior.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I have two things — an engineer and an athlete. I love hockey!
What do you like to do for extracurricular activities or outside of school? I love to read, and play volleyball with my friends. And I play with my brother a lot. At school, I’m in Drama Club where I just played the Lion in Dorothy in Wonderland, and I am on the RMS Rocking Robotics Team.
If you could meet anyone famous, who would you want to meet? Emma Watson, because she plays Hermione Granger. That’s my favorite character in Harry Potter, and she did a really good job playing her.
What has been your proudest moment? I’ve had a lot of them, but I think one of them would be finding out that I was chosen to be the Affton Strong Student of the Month. I can’t believe it’s for the whole district, and that’s pretty good.
Tell us about your family. Who supports you? My brother and I were born in Montreal; my mom is American and my dad is Canadian. Dad’s family was born in Scotland, but our name is Ireland. We’re big Montreal Canadiens fans. I’m happy to have such great parents! They are what helped me get this recognition.
What do you want people to know about Affton Schools? All the schools are friendly and have easy learning. It’s a fun district!
