Following an expansive search for talent and experience, the Affton School District Board of Education on Tues., Feb. 16, approved the hiring of Dr. J. Vincent Powell as Principal for Affton High School for the 2016-2017 school year.
“We are excited to have such recognized talent join the Affton School District team,” said Dr. Steve Brotherton, superintendent of Affton Schools. “I am confident that Vince’s established record of instructional leadership and accomplishment will help us achieve a new level of excellence at Affton High School. We are excited to see the positive growth to come under his guidance.”
Powell’s extensive experience in school administration includes his role as principal at Jackson High School in Jackson, Mo., since 2008, and as an assistant principal for nine years prior. He has also served as a Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) facilitator for the Leadership Academy at the Southeast Regional Professional Development Center (RPDC). Powell was instrumental in helping Jackson High School achieve recognition as an Exemplary Professional Learning Community (PLC) School, as well as one of ten schools in the state to receive a national High Schools That Work (HSTW) Gold Achievement Award in 2014.
“I am excited to be joining the Affton family and taking on new experiences and new challenges,” said Powell. “Affton is a great school district with a stellar reputation. I look forward to meeting the Affton High School faculty and students, and working together toward even greater success.”
In addition to his administrative experience, Powell taught physical education at the high school level for five years. He earned a bachelor of science in education and a master of arts in secondary school administration at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Mo., as well as a specialist degree and doctorate in educational leadership from Saint Louis University.
Powell and his wife, Dayna, a retired teacher, have two daughters, Jeanette, a junior at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and Josey, a senior at Cape Central High School in Cape Girardeau, Mo., who will be attending Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., in the fall.
Powell will begin serving as principal at Affton High School on July 1. He replaces Dr. Sue Jackson, who announced her retirement earlier this year.
