On Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the Affton Board of Education meeting, St. Louis Bosnians awarded $1,000 to the Bosnian-American Studies program at Affton High School for their promotion and support of the Run for Bosnia event held on Sept. 20, 2015. Benefiting students in both the St. Louis area and Bosnia, proceeds from the 5K run and walk go toward establishing scholarships for college-bound high school seniors.
“Our mission is to connect the Bosnian community with other communities in the St. Louis area. Affton High School has been a great partner to us and has opened an avenue to reach high school students,” said Akif Cogo, president of St. Louis Bosnians, Inc. “Affton registered the greatest number of participants in our Run for Bosnia, and it is our pleasure to award $1,000 to the Bosnian-American Studies program at Affton High School.”
Accepting the donation was Brian Jennings, English language arts teacher, as well as Affton High School seniors Berina Cizmic and Maksida Malic, and sophomore Zerina Cizmic.
“I am particularly proud of these three students who took on the promotion of Run for Bosnia not for extra credit or as a class project, but because they knew it was a good thing to do,” said Jennings. “We hope to use this donation to help fund a Bosnian-American Studies class trip to the Chicago Festival of Bosnian & Herzegovinian Film.”
