This school year we will once again be recognizing one Affton student each month for the things that make them Affton Strong, both in and out of school. Our Affton Strong Student of the Month for October is:
Lanie Pointer-Rogers Middle School
Lanie Pointer is an 8th grader at Rogers Middle School and is proud to be Affton Strong! Lanie has been instrumental in helping other students, not only at Rogers Middle School but in the St. Louis community. She was chosen as one of 60 students in the U.S. to attend a Fuel Up to Play Summit in Chicago this year. She is an athlete, student council member and WEB leader. She has been interviewed by local news people and you will hear her on Rams Radio ESPN before the games speaking about FUTP 60. She is an asset to our school and our Affton community. “I have watched Lanie for three years grow into an empowered young woman,” said Mrs. Beezley, “I am so proud of her accomplishments and her drive to help others.”
Parents: Jen and Grant Pointer
Sibling: Sam Pointer
What do you like best about Rogers Middle School? I like the staff because I can talk to them and have an actual conversation with them about life, school and everything.
What extracurricular activities have you participated in? Student Council and Yearbook for 3 years, Fuel Up to Play 60 for 4 years, and Orchestra for 5 years. I am on the 8th grade girls volleyball team and have played for CYC for 6 years. I am in a program called WEB that helps the 6th graders transition to middle school. I was fortunate to attend a country-wide summit for FUTP 60 in Chicago this past summer as the Missouri State Ambassador.
Do you have plans for college? I want to attend Washington University like my brother.
What do you hope to major in? I want to major in Law. My brother got me interested in it years ago. I always follow the rules and believe in justice. So I think that other people should too, and I would like to defend that in some sort of way.
What is your favorite subject? Music. I’ve liked music since I was born-1960’s music is my favorite. I listen to music because it calms me down.
What staff member has has made the biggest impact on your life, and how? Mrs.Beezley and my Mom. Mrs. Beezley has helped open doors that I never thought were possible. My Mom because she has pushed me in every way possible and has also been supportive throughout my school career.
Who is your role model? My brother Sam. He is what I define as successful and he has worked hard and showed me that if I want it I can get it. I would not have the personality I have today without him.
What has been your proudest moment? My proudest moment is when I found out my brother Sam got into Wash U because I saw him work hard for the past four years to achieve his dream school and I believe that I had a special part in that.
What do you want people to know about Affton Schools? I want people to know that even though Affton is pretty small, you can achieve anything you dream of and you will be supported throughout everything.
