Kindergarten, first- and second-grade students, along with Dr. Steve Brotherton, superintendent of Affton Schools, and members of the Affton Board of Education, broke ground on Monday, April 6, on an expansion and renovation to Mesnier Primary School.
Holding small gold shovels and wearing gold construction-style plastic helmets, the students marked the ceremonial start to the construction on a building expansion and renovation of the current primary school, located at 6930 Weber Road in Affton.
“We are excited to see this expansion project underway. Through the commitment and foresight of the Affton Board of Education, this project is funded as part of planned capital improvement projects for the district without needing to burden the taxpayers with a bond issue or tax levy,” said Brotherton. “This project represents not only growth in our schools, but also the strength in our community. We have students with us here today because they are the future of Affton.”
The Mesnier Primary building expansion and renovation will include: the addition of six (6) kindergarten classrooms, a new library, new building entry and security vestibule, a new nurse’s suite, additional parking, relocation of administrative offices, updates to existing corridors, and relocation of playground equipment.
The project architect is TR,i Architects. The bid for the construction of the primary school expansion was awarded by the Board of Education on March 3 to United Construction.
