2014-2015 SOAR Award & Superintendent’s Award Winners Announced

Fifteen staff and volunteers were honored at the Affton School District’s Service and Outstanding Achievement Recognition (SOAR) Awards on April 15. Two special Superintendent’s Awards were also presented.

“It is a privilege to represent the Board of Education and an honor to recognize some exceptional people that help make Affton School District amazing,” said Tom Bellavia, president of the Affton Board of Education. “These nominees encompass the excellence of character, performance, leadership, and service inherent to the SOAR Awards. They give of their time, their evenings, their weekends, and they certainly make a difference in each of our schools.”

Six nominees received the prestigious SOAR Award. They include: Mary Curran, volunteer; Denise Dolan, volunteer; Rachel Eaton, fifth-grade teacher at Gotsch Intermediate; Elise Himes, before and after care facilitator at Mesnier Primary; Jan Nelson, librarian at Affton High School; and Jan Pitt, volunteer.

15SuptAwardsChief Jim Fritz, Affton Fire Protection District, and Captain Christopher Stocker, commander of the Affton Southwest (Third) Precinct of the St. Louis County Police, each received the 2015 Superintendent’s Award for their support of and dedication to the Affton School District.

“Both Chief Fritz and Captain Stocker understand what it takes to work together to make a strong community. They support Affton Schools not only through the activities inherent to their positions – policing, firefighting, bus accidents – but they are there on the spot and keep us well informed,” said Dr. Steve Brotherton, superintendent. “Beyond our everyday interactions, they serve as role models, teachers of our kids outside of classrooms, and as support in our buildings. Through their commitment to the Affton community, they help us develop our students to become better citizens.”

In addition to the six SOAR Award winners, nine others were nominated and honored at the ceremony: Michael 15SOARNomineesBoehringer, instructional assistant at Affton Early Childhood; Chris Eggers, administrative assistant at the Administration Center; Brenda Fearheiley, secretary at Affton High School; Amy Gielow, Special School District teacher at Affton High School; Tim Muehleisen, volunteer; Evelyn Perez, bus driver; Laura Pezzani, gifted education teacher at Gotsch Intermediate; Chris Roth, volunteer; and Dave Thier, maintenance.
