Early childhood students from the current Affton Early Childhood Education program, along with Dr. Steve Brotherton, superintendent of Affton Schools, and members of the Affton Board of Education, broke ground in December on what will be the new Affton Early Childhood Education Center.
Holding small gold shovels and wearing purple and gold construction-style plastic hats, the students marked the ceremonial start to the construction and renovation of what once was an industrial site, located at 9832 Reavis Road in Affton.
“The primary message of the Affton School District is that we’re working toward continuous improvement,” said Dr. Brotherton. “We consider this Early Childhood Education Center an investment in the community and an investment in our students.”
The 19,000 square foot industrial building that will house the Affton Early Childhood Education Center will feature:
- Seven regular classrooms, serving a minimum of 72 students
- Specialty rooms: Diagnostic rooms, a health room, a project room, a lending library, and stage
- Small outdoor garden
- By design, corridors and other non-classroom areas will be useful for learning and exploring
- Reception area will include nooks where iPads can be set for children to show off their projects
Enrollment for full-day and part-day programs is expected to begin soon, with students beginning in August 2012.
